Phillip Ends Cook's 9 Year Domination!!

27/07/2018
Winners - Phillip
The Interhouse Athletics Carnival was held over five days of competition with the main carnival on Friday 27 July.  The week started with the running of the 3000m on Monday and the 1500m on Wednesday, with high participation in both events.  Spirit day on Tuesday was fun and colourful with students dressed in house colours/themes with Ayr High’s first ‘dance battle’ being held (replaced the traditional skits) - Banks Boogie (70’s inspired), Cook Calculus (evolution of dance), Macquarie Madhouse (Funhouse and manic) and Phillip Fitness (Macarena). The field events were held midday Thursday, with a strong competitive spirit across the houses.  The stage was now set for the track and standard events at Friday’s Carnival.

The day started with a quick assembly and it was straight down to competition in the first standard events.  Throughout the day, Banks led the charge with their enthusiasm, dancing and support for team mates taking out the spirit stick.  At one point the entire school was doing the Macarena on the track - awesome spirit by all throughout the day.  Phillip turned around a last placing in 2017 to lead the entire week to claim overall honours.  Banks and Cook tussled all week toing and froing positions but Banks held strong to finish second overall with Cook in third place and Macquarie in fourth place.  The final scores were Phillip - 2416, Banks - 2063, Cook - 1975, Macquarie - 1833.

The Ayr High Footrace, a handicapped (staggered start) 100 metre sprint, was run with a female and male race containing the fastest 100m sprinters from all six age-groups (U12-U19).  Mackayla Hodder (U13) and Morgan Noah (U14) were winners of the race, claiming $50 each.  It was again a great spectacle with all remaining students and staff lining the side of the track to cheer and support the runners in the final event of the day.

There were six records broken over the carnival.  Congratulations to the following students - Lachlan Mills (U12 3000m, 1500m, 800m, 400m), Zavier Wood (U12 Triple Jump) and Lama Ghee (U12 Shot Put).  Congratulations must go to the age champions who delivered outstanding performances, particularly Colby (U14) who won the “Individual Athletics Champion” trophy which recognises the highest points scorer of the Carnival.  Colby finished with 147 points.  Special mention to Dylan Meinicke (U13), who finished second overall with 141 points, and Lachlan Mills (U12) finishing with 134 points.

A squad will be selected from this carnival and will compete at the Burdekin Interschool Athletics Carnival on Friday 24 August at Home Hill State High School.
