In week 8, 20 students in Year 11 and 12 participated in the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) ‘On the Tools at Evolution’ Trade Experience. For three days, these students worked together in teams with mentors from Evolution Mining (Mt Carlton) on a mini-project. The project required them to design and construct a prototype vehicle, with the teams working between the classroom and the workshop.  Some of the students were surprised to find out that maths and even physics came in use when designing and wiring up their prototypes!
Every student who participated in the experience thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the program receiving 100% positive feedback.  “This program has inspired me to start a trade at TAFE,” was just one of many inspiring pieces of feedback that students made after the trade experience.  Our students impressed the staff from both QMEA and Evolution Mining, so much, that the students will be going for a site visit to Mt Carlton later in the year to witness the workplace first hand.  Some students have been so motivated from the three days that they have applied for work experience at Evolution Mining during the school holidays.
